Riding season has started again! The weather is warming up, and those isolated thunderstorms are keeping us on our toes. The good news is that many of our favorite routes in this neck of the woods are opening up, thanks to the incredibly heroic and efficient work of our DOT crews rebuilding roads after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. I want to share some essential tips to keep you safe on the road, especially with ongoing road work.

  1. Plan Your Route: Know your route and have an alternative plan in case of road closures or heavy traffic.
  2. Watch for Road Hazards: With road crews out and about, be mindful of debris, potholes, and uneven surfaces. These can be particularly dangerous for motorcyclists.
  3. Adhere to Traffic Signals: Whether it’s a manned flag station or an automated stoplight, always follow the signals. Ignoring them can lead to dangerous situations.
  4. Slow Down in Work Zones: Reduce your speed when approaching and passing through work zones. This gives you more time to react to unexpected changes.
  5. Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This helps prevent collisions if sudden stops occur.
  6. Stay Alert: Pay extra attention to road signs, workers, and equipment. Distractions can lead to accidents.
  7. Use Both Lanes: If the road narrows to one lane, take turns with other vehicles. Don’t try to squeeze through or overtake.
  8. Communicate with Other Drivers: Use hand signals and your horn if necessary to communicate your intentions to other drivers.
  9. Be Cautious at Intersections: Many accidents occur at intersections. Always approach with caution, even if you have the right of way. Look out for vehicles that may not see you.
  10. Stay Hydrated: Long rides can be dehydrating. Carry water and take breaks to stay hydrated and alert.
  11. Ride Defensively: Assume that other drivers may not see you. Be prepared to take evasive action if necessary.
  12. Know Your Limits: Don’t push yourself beyond your comfort level. If you’re tired or the weather turns bad, find a safe place to stop and rest.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the open roads safely this season. Remember, safety first!
